What leads people to colonize other people or countries? I’d say the need of resources that a country doesn’t have and economical reasonings far as producing goods from the resources that someone else have. Also sometimes it can just be the idea of Nationalism in the sense that it will always be in competition when it comes to the way human society work.

European imperialism in Africa and medical practices in “the immortal life of Henrietta lacks” are similar due to the fact that they are both are getting something taken from them without really having a say so. For example in the book on page 30 Skloot talked about how “Gey took any cell he could get his hands on; he called himself the world’s most famous vulture ,feeding on human specimens alone constantly. When TeLinde offered him a supply of cervical cancer tissue in exchange for trying to go some cells, Gey didn’t hesitate and TeLinde began collecting samples from any woman who happened to walk into Hopkins with cervical cancer, including Henrietta.” In that section of the book Henrietta didn’t already know that from the jump that she was going to get something taken from her, but no one really got her consent to be sampling her cells but before she even knew it she was getting plotted on from the moment she came into the hospital.

To revert that back to European imperialism DBQ paper all of the Europeans colonies decided to divide and take ownership of the different parts of Africa by deciding who takes what without not 1 leading person from Africa being able to attend the separation if their own country .

Another similarity between both book and European imperialism in Africa is that when it came to change nowhere in Africa had no clue to what was going on because there wasn’t no one in charge and when there was no one there to stop the Europeans from stripping the African colonies of the goods forcing them to give up their resources without a say (Congo and European Imperialism Video).

Given both a country and a person can be stripped of a natural good without say then importing and exporting their goods all over to gain money and make a global rise in the economic ranking in both cases was the Congo stripped of natural resources and forced to labor and pre manufacturing and in the book Henrietta was stripped of her cells and they were soon to be shipped off as well.

In conclusion what led to colonizing other people or countries where the need of resources that a country doesn’t have and economical reasonings far as producing goods from the resources that someone else have. Also the idea of Nationalism in the sense that it will always be in competition between growing strong countries. Some choose to look it as survival of the fittest and that’s what it came down to.

  1. You answered all of the questions supporting it with back up, I understand the concept of how resources was the reason behind European Imperialism.

  2. I like how you said the need to colonize was more for nationalism and not for economic reasons.
Also I liked how you fully went into to detail in backing up your thesis

  3. I agree with what Destiny said in her essay. The want and need for resources was what drove people to colonize Africa. Also something I didn’t include in my essay or blog post was the survival of the fittest , which was a very clever idea in my opinion. One final thing is Destiny referenced multiple sources in her blog post.
