Times are hard right now but the government is doing their best to pick up the slack. The Great Depression is in motion and is the deepest and longest-lasting economic downturn in the history of the Western industrialized world. In the United States, the Great Depression began soon after the stock market crash of October 1929, which sent Wall Street into a panic and wiped out millions of investors. Everyone keeps raving about, how much control should the government have in the lives of its citizens? Control meaning as in how much power and citizens as in people of the US. The government should have a great deal of control in the lives of its citizens, for example, by creating jobs through programs like the TVA, helping minorities, and supporting the elderly through Social Security.

The government had a great impact on its citizens’ lives in Tennessee when FDR created the TVA program. Lorena Hickok’s letter to Harry L. Hopkins says, “10,000 men are at work, building with timber and steel and concrete the new deal most magnificent project”. Also,“nearly 10,000 men about 9,500 are working in the valley”. This is saying that, the TVA program put 10,000 men into work about nearly 9,500 are working in the valley. That was a big achievement for Tennessee at the time of the Great Depression.

The government needs to play a bigger role in our society to create new jobs and prevent discrimination. The government made many jobs available during World War II allowing blacks to serve during the war. Blacks came together and started to march so that convinced FDR to create Executive order 8802 which prevented discrimination, and that made jobs more available for blacks. To be exact it was Phillip A. Randolph led the march, he was a civil rights leader.

Another way the government plays a positive role in our future lives is by creating Social Security Benefits. In FDR speech to the US on the radio he said.“This Social Security measure give some protection to 30 million of our citizens who will receive direct benefits through unemployment compensation, through old age pensions, and through increased services for protection of children and the prevention of ill health” (FDR’s 1935 Speech). What FDR is stating in his speech is that Social Security is a protection to almost 30,000,000 people and will provide a direct benefit. Basically if you can’t provide for yourself then the government will give you money.

Overall I say that the government should have a great deal of control in the lives of it’s citizens. Some might argue that Social Security is taking too much money out of their pay checks. The money that is being taken is going to help the US citizens in the long run, once they have retired and applied for Social Security. The reason I’m saying all this is because with the government having total control the US would progress as a nation. When we eliminate discrimination, and continue with social security benefits, and creating more helpful associations in the US. Therefore the government should have a great deal of control in the lives of its citizens.
