Imagine that you were an African American during the Great Depression. The Great Depression lasted from 1929 to 1939 in the United States. How much control should the government have in the lives of its citizen? The government should have some control in the lives of its citizens because the government needed to step in to help the African Americans and  children during the Great Depression. However, I think that TVA program was a negative program.

The government needed to help African Americans. During the depression black women were servants at “slave markets.” Government programs that were made to help people pay their mortgages often did not help people on the basis of their of race. I think that the government needed to step up and help African Americans because they were treated bad during the Great Depression.

When the Great Depression was going on the government needed to step in and help the children. Because during the depression there parents  didn’t  have enough  food to feed their children’s. The children of the migrant fruit workers look bad and sad. My thesis supports my evidence because during the Great Depression people was treated bad and they children too.

Although the government needed to help African Americans and children, in some cases its programs could hurt people. I think that the TVA program was a negative thing. The TVA made the people move and they had to take their dead relatives with them (Source D). Also, “the federal government did not offer much help in resettling the displaced people of the Norris Basin” (Source D).To me I think that the TVA was a bad program and the government didn’t help.

I think that the government should have some control over the citizens because people went thought a lot of things. It important to study about my topic because people can know a little about the Great Depression.

  1. Christina, I really like your counter argument saying the government should NOT have much control. I found your research on women in “slave markets” very interesting. I like how you also mentioned the welfare of the children during the Depression.

I really like your counter arguement for the TVA. It illustrated the negative aspects to the TVA. It would be interesting to show the point of view of someone who supported the TVA, as well.
