The US government are focused on issues that’s not benefitting everyone of race. So what should they do? Who can everyone turn to?

It’s 1930, the stock market crashed last year, and families are feeling the pinch as the pink slips roll in from struggling factories.  There are so many problems that need to be addressed.

The Great Depression (1929-39) was the deepest and longest-lasting economic downturn in the history of the Western world. In the United States, the Great Depression began soon after the stock market crash of October 1929, which sent Wall Street into a panic and wiped out millions of investors. The Great Depression soon led to American citizens losing their jobs and . Not only that, global depression hit Germany hard, which helped to cause WWII. Following Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor, the United States became involved in the war. If the US government could not control big issues than what makes you think the government could make things better?

So, how much control should the US government have on the lives of its citizens?

Overall, the government should not have control over the lives of it’s citizens because it did a poor job of protecting the rights of minorities during the Great Depression and WWII. Specifically, many New Deal programs excluded African Americans and the US government placed Japanese-Americans in internment camps during WWII.

The government shouldn’t have control over the lives of it’s citizens because many New Deal programs excluded African Americans. If African Americans were sharecroppers, cash tenants, and domestic servants then they would not be included for Social Security and that’s not fair. It’s not fair because there were more African Americans that did “under the table work” because many individuals did not hire people of color so, African Americans did not have the choice to grow their own crops and sell them for money. For example, “We all know that Negro cash farm tenants are at the bottom of the economic scale. He is not employed. There is no relation of master and servant by which he gets wages on which a tax could be collected. Therefore this population is left out from the old-age annuity, and that represents approximately 490,000 Negroes.” In the 1900s, being a sharecropper, domestic servant, or cash tenant was not considered a job because the government or a business was not paying them. Therefore, African Americans was considered “unemployed” so they were left out of the benefits provided by the Social Security Benefits provided by the Social Security Act.

Another reason why the government should not have control over the lives of its citizens is because the US government placed Japanese-Americans in internment camps. Japanese-Americans were placed in internment camps two months after Pearl Harbor was attacked; but during World War II, more than 127,000 Japanese-American citizens were imprisoned at internment camps all over the United States. One reason why the US government imprisoned people of Japanese descent is because they feared that the Japanese was being loyal to their homeland and were also feeding Japan information. In the text (Document E) it says, “s in an atmosphere of fear and anger at Japan.” The US government felt the only way for the United States to become a safer environment was for Japanese-Americans be locked away. Another reason the US government locked Japanese-Americans away is because the US government was being racist. The US government was being racist because they only locked citizens of Japanese descent or a color that was close to their skin. In the source, it states “But the American government has not taken any such high-handed action against Germans and Italians – and their American – born descendants on the East Coast, as has been taken against Japanese and their American born descendants on the West Coast. Germans and Italians are “whites”. The US government was not being racially equal and took things out on Japanese-Americans, rather than Italian or German citizens.

Many people argue that the US government should have a lot of control over the lives of it’s citizens because the government knows what is best for everyone however, they government should be focused on more important issues like inequality, racism, people being lynched, diseases, the military, and ect.; instead of the individual’s personal lives and what the American citizens feel is right.

This is why the government should have no control over the lives of its citizens. This is an important thing to think about because the American citizens should be able to control their own lives instead of letting the government control them. The US government should be more focused on bigger issues rather than trying to have control over their citizens lives.
