The Great Depression was a severe world wide event. People all over the world where going hungry because they had lost their money, jobs and houses. During the 1930s, the Great Depression was going on. People needed electricity, food, money, and other kinds of help. The government provided help by creating Social Security, the TVA, and food programs at schools. All these programs were part of FDR’s New Deal. How much control should the government have in the lives of citizens? The Government should have a lot of control over citizens in the US. During the Great Depression, it did good things like providing Social Security and electricity.
FDR created Social Security during the Great Depression in order to provide benefits for those who could not work due to disabilities or old age. In 1935, FDR delivered a speech after he created the law to make Social Security: “This social security measure gives some protection to 30 million of our citizens who will receive direct benefits through unemployment compensation, through old-age pensions, and through increased services for the protection of children and the prevention of ill health” (Doc A). Social Security gives people assistance when they become unemployed or sick so that people could survive even though they were unable to work.
FDR created the TVA during the Great Depression. The TVA created electricity, better homes, flood control, and construction jobs to help the poor and unemployed in Tennessee. “The TVA was created to raise to raise the standard of living of a half a million people” (Doc B). One citizen living in Tennessee wrote about how excited her little boy was to see their new electric lights in their home: “The first benefit we received from the REA service was lights, and aren’t lights grand? My little boy expressed my sentiments when he said, ‘mother, I didn’t realize how dark our house was until we got electric lights” (Doc C). This quote shows that the government cared because they’re providing better services. In some way TVA was not helpful because it made people move out of their homes so that they could build dams in those areas. However, this way okay because the TVA gave people better homes in other places.
The Government should have a lot of control over citizens in the US. During the Great Depression, it did good things like providing Social Security and electricity. Some people might say that the government should not have control over citizens in the United States because they want their freedom. However, I said that they should have control because the government can only help people if it’s powerful. It is important to consider how the government created programs to help people because we need these programs to survive, both in the past and now.
