The early 1900s was a period of crisis in the U.S. president Franklin D Roosevelt inherited a country that was falling apart. People were losing, jobs, children were suffering and living conditions were poor. ‘’ Two months ago we were facing serious problems. The country was dying by inches. It was dying because trade had declined to dangerously low levels ;prices for basic goods were destroying the value of the assets of national institutions’’ FDR second fireside chat.

The government should have more control over the lives of its citizen by providing resources, social security and help for children.

During the Great Depression FDR developed several programs to provide help for the citizens, espcially the needy. Programs like The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), The Works Progress Administration (WPA) and The Rural Electrification Act(REA) were used to provide jobs in many communities. In Tennessee  the TVA  provided ten thousand men with work in the  building industry using timber, steel and concrete. under the New Deal magnificent project (source B Lorena Hickok). Thousand of people were working in the valley for five and a half hours a day for a real living wage. REA service was lights at first  people didn’t have lights ‘’ Mother , I didn’t realize how dark our house was until we got electric lights’’ ( source C).

One of the main features of president Roosevelt’s recovery plan during the Great Depression  was the introduction of social security.  This program provides benefits for retired people and those who are unemployed or disabled. On August 14, 1935 President Franklin D.Roosevelt spoke of the Social Security Act ‘’The social security measure gives some protection to 30 million of our citizen who will receive direct benefits through unemployment compensation, through old age pensions, and through increased services for the protection of children and the prevention of ill health’’(source D).

‘’ This law, too, represents a cornerstone in a structure intended to lessen the force of possible future depression. It will act as a protection to future administrations against the necessity of going deeply into debt to help the needy. It is, in short, a law that will take care of human needs and at the same time provide the United States  a sound economic structure’’(source D).

Children during The Great Depression were struggling with clothes and food. Eleanor  Roosevelt ‘’ was famous for traveling the country during the Depression to talk to average Americans who were struggling, and she promoted many programs that helped people make it during those times’’(source Text A l.H) . Children of migrant fruit workers had to sit in the back of a truck that were moving with their parents. ‘’Schools began to serve multiple purposes, and children would often receive much needed food at the school’’ source photo A2) .

Country were falling apart, losing jobs, children were suffering, living conditions were poor until Eleanor Roosevelt changed a lot of things in The Great Depression for the better. Eleanor made people feel important. TVA ,REA ,WPA helped the people in The Great Depression by giving the people what they needed.
